If you’ve ever spent even 2 minutes on the internet, it’s pretty clear that there is no shortage of weight loss, fat loss, and diet advice out in the world today.

In a way, this is kind of a good thing. If someone is motivated to lose weight and change the direction of their health, they’ve got a ton of wonderful information at their fingertips.

But, in a way, this is a very BAD thing as well, because based on what I’ve seen on a lot of weight loss and diet sites, the information is inaccurate, not scientifically based, and, in some cases, could even be detrimental to someone’s health.
That is usually where the confusion begins…and for some…the INSANITY!

How many pounds should I gain during pregnancy?

Experts advise women with a healthy BMI – 18.5 to 24.9 – to gain between 25 and 35 pounds. If you’re overweight, it’s recommended that you gain between 15 and 25 pounds by the end of your pregnancy, at a rate of approximately 2 to 3 pounds a month, mostly in your second and third trimesters. Women who are obese are advised to gain only 11 to 20 pounds during pregnancy.

Your Guide to Breastfeeding

Making the decision to breastfeed is a very personal matter. It’s also one that’s very likely to elicit strong opinions from friends and family.

Many medical authorities, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, strongly recommend breastfeeding. But you and your baby are unique, and the decision is up to you. To help you decide, WebMD offers this overview of breastfeeding. Find out what the benefits are for you and your baby. And if you do decide to breastfeed, here’s information you can use to get started with confidence.

What Are the Benefits of Breastfeeding for Baby?

Breast milk provides the ideal nutrition for infants. It has the perfect mix of vitamins, protein, and fat — everything your infant needs to grow. And it’s all provided in a form more easily digested than infant formula. Breast milk contains antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria. Breastfeeding reduces your baby’s risk of having asthma or allergies. Babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first six months, without any formula, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and bouts of diarrhea. They also have fewer hospitalizations and trips to the doctor.

Breastfeeding has been linked to higher IQ scores in later childhood in some studies. The physical closeness, skin-to-skin touching, and eye contact all help your baby bond with you and feel secure. Breastfed infants are more likely to gain the right amount of weight as they grow rather than become overweight children. The AAP says breastfeeding plays a role in the prevention of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). It’s been thought to lower the risk of diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers as well but more research is needed to confirm these findings.

What Is Sensa?

Jillian Michaels

What is Sensa?Sensa Weight Loss System

Sensa was developed by a doctor to cause taste and smell stimulation. The theory is that by using “tastants” to fool your sense of smell and taste, you will eat less. If you eat less, then you will obviously lose some weight. The Sensa website states that all you have to do is sprinkle some of their product on your favorite foods and your cravings to over-eat  will subside. According to this site you can lose up to thirty pounds by just covering your food with Sensa.

What is in Sensa?

What’s the truth? First Sena is not really a diet. You put the product on your meals just like you would salt. The ingredients are tricalcium phosphate, maltodextrin, silica and other flavors. There is nothing unusual or special about these ingredients. The company does have a pretty good variety of flavors, everything from cheddar cheese to onion to ranch dressing. Their main claim is that these flavors will trick your brain into thinking that you have eaten enough and your stomach is full.

The product costs about $60.00 a month, which might be a little high for some. However, there is a 6 month kit which they sell for $235.00.

It’s also important to note that while there has been clinical studies, there has been no clinical trials. While most people probably wouldn’t pick up on this, there is a big difference. Clinical trials are much more rigorous and have higher standards. There has been nothing published in peer reviewed journals either, which raises red flags for many.

Most experts feel that much more study is needed to confirm the validity of the link between smell, taste and direct weight loss.

I’ve seen the commercials for Sensa all over the place and have to say that they are very convincing. The ability of advertising firms to promote an idea and sell it is truly amazing. That is the problem with many weight loss claims. There is a lot of hype, flash and celebrity, but when you get down to brass tacks and do some real investigating, the actual proof for many weight loss products is usually pretty slim.

It’s All About Healthy Lifestyles

As much as some people hate to admit it, healthy eating and some sort of exercise regimen is how to lose weight. To lose weight in a healthy and thoughtful way you need to change your lifestyle and break bad habits. A whole new way of eating and approaching exercise is how you will really drop the extra pounds. Adopting ahealthier lifestyle is how to lose weight , and just as importantly, keep it off long term.

How To Lose Pregnancy Weight

How To Lose Pregnancy WeightDrop The Pounds After Pregnancy

So, you’ve had your baby and he/she is healthy and all you expected, plus more. With the addition of a new child you now have an unaccountable number of things to take care of and worry about.

The baby is obviously number 1, but what about you? You won’t be doing anybody any favors by neglecting your health.

Yes, it’s important to fit in some sort of weight loss plan into the million other things you are responsible for. Two points to keep in mind. First, if you were at a healthy weight before your pregnancy and only gained the recommended weight during pregnancy, then you will probably be able to get back to your healthy weight within months. However, if your were overweight or gained too much weight during your pregnancy, then it could take up to a year to get back to a normal, healthy weight.

Either way, here are some tips to help you on your way to becoming a healthier mom.

Lose Weight Fast- Not

Don’t be impressed by the latest celebrity mom who almost immediately lost her extra pounds. It had to be with pills or an extremely strict diet. Most important point to take away is that this is not good for you or your baby. It can be very dangerous as well. Post pregnancy you need to try to relax and slowly lose the extra weight. It took at least nine months to put it on, it could take just as long to lose it.

Healthy Lifestyle

No diets. You have enough going on as a new mother already. Try to figure out a healthy eating plan that you will be able to stick with. Remember to stay around 1,800 or 1,900 calories, especially if breastfeeding.

Fill up with the super foods. Antioxidants, Omega-3’s, and protein. You and your child need plenty of nutrients to grow and develop. Don’t skip the dairy, you need calcium for strong bones. An added bonus is that protein rich foods fill you up for longer.

There is some dispute over whether breastfeeding helps with losing the extra pounds, but there is no dispute about how great it is for your baby. It builds a strong immune system and has many other health benefits. If you breastfeed you can also add approximately 300 calories to your diet.

Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. The amount of water a person needs everyday is in dispute as well. One great way to figure out if you are getting properly hydrated is to check out your urine. It should be almost clear or a pale yellow.

Exercise. Keep yourself moving as much as possible and try to figure out a strength training program. Maintaining strong muscles and bones is vital for new mothers. Exercise is not just about toning muscles and losing weight, it’s very helpful with reducing the symptoms of depression, stress and can help with sleep.

Get sleep. O.K., you can stop laughing now. Yes, it is very difficult to achieve this one, but you need to try to get as much as possible. If you are constantly tired you will eat unhealthy and not take very good care of yourself. Take naps when possible and enlist some help; you need sleep to be on top of your game.

If you need help, get it! Most cities and towns have all sorts of programs to help new mothers. You should take advantage of all help and resources. A healthier you is a healthier baby.

Mom’s Health While Pregnant Linked to Autism Risk

Obesity, Autism and Pregnancy

Recently there has been more news about the risk of autism in babies born to women who were overweight while pregnant. While there have been some casual links to back up this claim, it’s really to early to be definitive. While the health establishment has known about the health risks to babies born to unhealthy women for quite a while; obesity and other issues like high blood pressure and diabetes are just some of the factors. Common sense would tell you however, that any improvements to a mothers health would be positive for the child she was carrying.

With growing information about an autistic child’s problems with metabolism and  the immune system, it follows that there might be some correlation with the mothers obesity and overall health. But it’s important to keep in mind  there could be other things associated with the increase in autism. Don’t forget the fierce battles over vaccines, which still is hotly debated. Keep in mind a healthy mother is obviously a positive for a variety of reasons. As of right now it would be smart to be as healthy as possible if you are pregnant or not;  just for pragmatic reasons. Keep an eye out for further new information on autism and obese mothers.
